Q & A: Balancing Work and Service

After posting a comment over on Pearl Necklace's blog at Happily Surrendered and Submissive, she asked me a question in return.  In the spirit of March Q & A, she was kind enough to let me post her question here.

Pearl's question was…How do you balance your work and service to Heron?

Work is something that has always been important to me.  After watching my mother suffer in an unhappy marriage for many years more than she should have, I knew from a young age that it was imperative for me to have the capability to be independent.

About five years ago, I finally reached the position within my organization that I had been striving for and wow...did the stress consume me.  It was a tough transition that lasted over a year and had we been involved in the dynamic at the time, I honestly don't know how I would have fared.  Luckily, I’ve adapted and things are much more settled in my work life but balancing the two parts of my life was still a challenge.

So here are some things that I find help me keep the balance...

1) Learning to leave work at work - For so long, I thought that the world would stop turning if I wasn't constantly on top of every little things whether I was on the clock or not.  I also brought home each and every stress of the day.  I realize this is dependent on the nature of the job, but if you can, completely separate yourself from the job when you walk out the door at the end of the day. We are expected not to bring home life troubles into the workplace, so flip that around the other way and don't bring work life troubles home.  As soon as I get in the car, my focus is already shifting to Heron and my family.  I am to call Him on my way home and this begins the process of resetting.  It also gives Him a chance to really judge what kind of day I have had.

2) Having a routine - I am fortunate to have a great schedule.  I work 7:30- 4:30 which still leaves me plenty of time in the day.  Although I do have some domestic expectations through the week, Heron keeps those tasks fairly routine so that I am not overwhelmed.  He may ask me to take care of few extra things now and then but for the most part, because we both work, He is quite helpful.  One thing that helps is I plan our weekly menu on the weekends and we do all the grocery shopping on Sundays.  This allows me to immediately start on dinner when I get home each day.  Because I view cooking as part of my service to Him, it quickly puts me in my submissive space and no longer seems a chore like it once was.  I find enjoyment in having His food ready when He gets home and earning His approval for a good meal.  This whole routine sets the mood for the rest of the evening which is usually taken up dealing with sports, homework, and bedtimes.  And while sexual service is probably not at the level He would prefer during the week, we do what we can and try not to stress about those days when life is just too busy. There is always another day.  One thing I found is that even in the busy times or the times He doesn't hold me as accountable, it's helpful to continue doing the little things that are part of my routine.  They are reminders of my service to Him.

3) Even though I have very different responsibilities at work and home, I am still the same person - I no longer view myself as having to juggle 2 different lives or parts of myself.  Yes, I am the leader at work and maybe I have different roles but ultimately, I am providing a service to my employer and my employees.  I am taking care and seeing that my department runs smoothly and that my employees have what they need to do their job effectively, which isn't so different than the service I provide at home.  It's all about perspective. We, as women, tend to wear many different hats, whether it is wife, submissive, mother, daughter, care-taker, employee, employer, etc.  I like to think that no matter what hat I am wearing, I am still the same person underneath.   Another thought I had on this is that I have let some of the positive attributes of my submission bridge the gap and flow over into my work which also helps keep the balance.  For example, becoming a better communicator and listener has not only improved my submission at home but it has made me a stronger leader at work.

4) Ask for help - This one can be hard for us women but I had to give myself permission not to be superwoman.  I started listening when Heron told me to take a break or go to bed early. It's impossible to do it all so don't be afraid to accept or ask for help.  We figured out what our priorities were during the week and use the weekends to catch up on the rest.  This keeps me from being completely exhausted every single night should He want to squeeze in a small scene.  This may or may not translate in my blog posts but most sexual service during the week is in the form of my orally pleasuring Him.  The majority of our "play" is reserved for the weekends.

5) Having time for myself - Usually easier said than done I know, but Heron requires it.  It's amazing how refreshed I feel to just have some time to walk, read, or whatever else it is that allows me to regroup.  It's important that I give the best of myself both to my work and to Him, but I can't continue to do that if I'm not also taking care of me.

Thank you Pearl for giving me an opportunity to answer such a great question!

Gratitude

I hate to admit this but yesterday was one of those days.  We've had more intense play than usual, so I assume maybe it was a bit of drop, possibly mixed with something Heron said the night before that left me a little unsettled.  After crying all the way to work, I drifted through the better portion of my day trying to process what was going on, but ended up more and more off track.

The last time I felt like this, He was understanding but also quick to remind me "remember, this isn't about you at all."

As harsh as this sounded at the time, it was true.  I gave myself to Him completely, and with that, I also had to give up certain ways of thinking.  But from time to time, it just doesn't seem that simple.

His words echoed in my head all day long but failed to bring any comfort and did nothing to cease the insanity building in my mind.

After getting home from work, I set to cooking dinner.  I like to set up my laptop by the stove so I can easily view my recipes and catch up on blogs if I get a chance.  Now, I've been following a blog recently, Serving As Nature Intended.  A reader here on my blog actually turned me to slave kate's blog when I began talking about the wooden horse.  Even though, our situations are very different, I have to say, Her words inspire and humble me.  She carries herself with such an eloquence but is also extremely open and honest.  And if I could only live up to be a tenth of the slave that she is...well, I would be pretty blessed.

I don't know why, but I decided to explore her web page a little further than usual and clicked the link to her book.  Reading through the bit that is available on Amazon, I came to a word that stopped me in my tracks.

GRATITUDE.

Such a key principle, and I had lost sight of it.  Almost immediately, a peace of mind washed over me.  It's amazing what just the right words will do, at just the right time!  So, thank you slave kate.

These are just a few things I found to be grateful for...

...the beautiful sunrise on my way to work, because it means I am alive.
...my health, because it means that I can serve to the best of my ability
...the ability to submit my body for His use, even if that means enduring pain for His pleasure.
...any pleasure He allows me, or denies me (still working on the being grateful for denial part)
...His praise, compassion, leadership, discipline, and guidance.
...knowing that in every breath I take, I have His unwavering and unconditional love.
...and I'm even grateful for the wooden horse (eh...that part may be pushing it!)

A Simple Comment

Beginning today, Daddy has a temporary reprieve from the school work that has been keeping him so busy. I don't think I've really ever discussed why he's going back to school. We both graduated many years ago. I have used my degree every day since, he has not. And while He has a good position, if He hopes to make Himself more marketable, it is going to be necessary to match education to work experience.

Anyways, it's been extremely trying on us all but I truly admire the fact that He's made such a commitment. There is no way I would want to go back to school at this stage of my life. Working for the government, I'm looking at being able to retire in less than a decade. How awesome is that?! Now whether I actually can is a completely different story.

But school takes up a lot of his evening and weekend time and even though He's in the house, He is typically barricaded in the office.  Now, I'm not perfect, not even close, but I have tried to maintain His expectations of my service, even if that meant self-direction.  Of course, I am always used sexually how and when the need suits Him, but honestly, much of the time I have felt pretty lonely and set aside.  But these are my issues and feelings I try not to burden Him with it all because it's a temporary situation and He doesn't need any more stress.

However, yesterday was the end of one eight week session and the next doesn't start until next month. So He announces, while we were driving along from one place to another, that we would be "getting back to it" starting today.

We continued down the road a ways and I just stared out the window, mulling over that comment. On the one hand, it excited me that He would finally have some decent time for us, but what He said, and the way I was interpreting it, really wasn't sitting well.

It’s not as if I get a break from being submissive or from being His slave.  So in my mind, there wasn’t anything I needed to “get back to”.  The more I thought about it, the worse it was getting and I was dangerously close saying something that I would probably regret.

So, I waited a few minutes and tried to talk myself off that ledge. But something had to be said, I just had to figure out how to say it...politely.  Finally, I asked if I could make a comment. He told me to speak my mind so I chose my words carefully. I explained, that in my opinion, I had stayed accountable in my service to Him but His comment made it seem as if my efforts were being negated.

He assured me that my service wasn’t in question and He only meant to make light of the fact that He would have more time for me, for maintenance, and for play. The conversation instantly put my mind at ease, but isn't it crazy how one simple comment can be so easily misconstrued?

Resistance is Futile

Back before the holidays, you might remember I was on orgasm restriction.  I write about it now because at the time, there was so much going on and I just didn't have the emotional energy to invest in writing about anything.

The first week of my restriction was spent with Daddy tormenting me or making me torment myself.  It was close to the holidays so if you missed that post, you can read about it here or if you happen to remember, I was only allowed a couple of inches of a particular dildo and at one point, I was given the same amount of His cock.  An additional caveat to this was under no circumstances was my clit to be touched, not even accidentally while using the dildo.  Sheesh!! He's demanding isn't He?

Of course, my mouth stayed full of cock on a nightly basis and for the the first week, I stayed on an incredible edge, every minute of the day all I could think about the throbbing and the constant pool of wetness between my legs.

Somewhere during that second week, well, the edge just faded away.  He continued using my mouth almost nightly but it's the same thing that tends to happen whenever my arousal is abandoned for too long.  My body decides it's not getting any, so it just...shuts...down.. It's not like I am even angry or upset, not yet anyways.  I think it's a way of coping and pushing my own desires aside so that I can remain focused on His needs and pleasure.

Then at some point (in this case it was around the end of the second week), sleep becomes more difficult, the stress of daily life builds up, and my resolve begins to crumble...I begin to crumble.  Of course, the holidays were upon us as well which didn't help things either.

I try my best to hide the hurt when it starts creeping in, desperate not to let Him believe my submission is wavering.  Retreating into myself, I get quiet until He forces it out of me.  He knows what's wrong but makes me say it out loud anyways.

I can't help but wonder if you even want me anymore.

Of course He wants me.  After all, He uses my mouth just about every night, doesn't He?

Being a wife and a slave are intertwined roles for me at this point, with the exception of this one area.  As slave, I understand all of it.  But as a wife, I struggle and the ache in my chest brings doubt.  As we laid there and tears rolled down my cheeks, He snuggled with me and assured me of His desire to have me (all of me) and I will see just how much.  I just had to continue waiting until the  upcoming weekend.  I beg Him not to make that type of promise because it always seems that things never work out for one reason or another.  But He holds fast to His promise and in the back of my mind, I know better than to get my hopes up.

Well, it WAS the weekend before Christmas after all.  There was a party to attend and one to host, food to cook, a house to clean, and while I worked on most of that, He had plenty of school work to keep Him busy.  Through no real fault of His own, our time together didn't happen.  There wasn't even time for any of my expected nightly cock worship.  I tried once again to hide how crushed I was, particularly when He didn't say anything about our missed time together.

Monday night came and He climbed into bed giving me the signal to take my usual place of worship between His legs.  As wrong as it was, I had already assumed and peacefully resigned myself to only servicing Him in the same way I had so many nights before.

Surprisingly, He told me to get my pants off and lay on my back, words that would normally make me get quite giddy.  I wanted to be excited, really I did.  But as He climbed on top and pressed inside of me, I couldn't find a way out of the hole I was in to give myself to Him completely.  All the hurt and frustration was bubbling up to the surface and I was stuck in a terrible place...in my head.  He could feel my resistance but didn't stop.  He tried twisting and pulling my nipples.  He grabbed my throat pinning me to the bed.  He wrapped His fist in my hair, pulling my head back and ordered me to cum around His cock. Normally, any or all of these things drive me wild and send me over the edge, but it wasn't working this time. Nothing was working because I wasn't letting it work.  I might as well have been behind the Great Wall of China.

We talked alot afterwards.  He interpreted my actions (or lack of reaction to Him) as resentment.  I tried to explain that it was simply hurt.  Hurt that He hadn't acknowledged His broken promise over the weekend, and hurt that after weeks of not having Him, He seemed so cold.  We went round and round until there was really nothing left to say.  But my words left Him in a quandary.

Does He alter His actions, possibly allowing me to perceive that I have some level of control?

Or does He continue on in the manner that pleases Him and I adjust my expectations, if need be?

It was wise that He chose the latter because as luck would have it, He took me again a couple nights later...in the exact same way.  And apparently, once the air had been cleared and I actually communicated all the crap floating in my head, I was just fine.  This time when He gave the order to cum around His cock, my body responded to Him the way it should.

But just like I have a tendency to do, I hold on to things far too long, fearing that voicing the types of thoughts I have is somehow contrary to being truly submissive.

One of these days, maybe I will learn...but probably not.

A Tale of Three Implements

So Daddy implemented a new expectation, or rule if you will. Well, actually, it's not completely new. It was something in my list of rules already that had been put on hold. He has made a slight modification and it is now back in force.

The Rule:

Before performing any sexual services, I am to present Him with one of three, somewhat quiet, implements.

The switch...

The fly swatter...

Or the loopy! (oh how I hate the loopy)

A couple of conditions though:

The same implement shouldn't be offered twice in a row...

And He may or may not intend to use it but it still must be offered.

These have all been tucked away between the mattress and box spring on my side of the bed, so they are ready at a moments notice

So I know it's probably going to happen, but here's hoping I don't forget. I thought maybe writing it down here would help commit it to memory.

Of course, this must have inspired Him to take a more thorough look-see at my rules, I presume to jog His memory on things I am supposed to be doing and make some other minor updates.

Darn if He didn't point out a couple things I have been neglecting, not purposely I should add. But yeah, I don't have much in the way of reasonable defense. Not that having a good defense matters. It's supposed to be done....period. And I didn't communicate that I was having problems completing said tasks.

So....now I am to remind Him to take care of those infractions tonight.

Yikes....guess I will have knots in my stomach the rest of the day!

Not Tonight Dear...

One reader that I have gotten to know pretty well asked me the other day, if I am ever allowed to use the "not tonight pass" if I am tired or not feeling well, particularly after working all day and juggling busy schedules with the kids.

This is a really good question because we all have days that we are tired and not particularly in the mood, right?

But truthfully, in our dynamic, there is no such thing as a "not tonight pass", at least for me to use anyways.  Regardless of stress, exhaustion, schedules, if Heron requires my service, I am expected to willingly comply.  This was one the first aspects of control that He took from me at the start of our D/s relationship..

Now, having said that, He is also very aware of how I feel and it is quite common for Him to see the exhaustion in my face and insist that I go to bed, even if He is "in the mood".

In fact, this happened just the other night.  One of the things He requires of me is to use my mouth on Him every night, unless He states otherwise.  As usual, I was ready and waiting on the bed when He came in the room.  He took one look at me and said, "you look really tired...just get your rest tonight".  I didn't even try to convince Him otherwise.  I thanked Him for understanding and laid right down.

My well being is of utmost importance to Him but I think another reason He is more understanding now when I am not feeling up to sex or play is that He no longer has to be concerned with when He might get His needs met.  He can just expect it the next day or as soon as opportunity presents itself.

Whereas, if we were still in our previous egalitarian relationship and I turned him down, His needs could go unmet indefinitely because it was all about when I wanted it and He was at my mercy to decide when I was willing and in the mood.

At first, I thought this rule would be horrid but to be honest, I'm so relieved to not have this power anymore.   First, I started to see that there were plenty of times I didn't necessarily think I was in the mood, only to realize the connection and release (if allowed) was just what I needed.  I also think having more sex and play, leads to wanting or craving more sex and play.

Not to mention...being used, whether I want to or not, plays right into my of fantasies about  being taken against my will:)

I've spent a lot of time looking back over the previous years of our marriage and I truly regret all the fighting over sex.  I used it as a form of control and had some pretty selfish views.  I don't want to blame my upbringing, but I was just raised to believe there was something wrong with a man who wanted it all the time.

Even though my husband always had a very high drive, my pleasure was always His priority and I thanked Him for that by constantly pushing Him away and making Him feel like less of a person for the needs He had.  I've just had to accept that some things you can't take back...you can only spend the rest of your life making up for it.

It's all kind of ironic now though.  As His slave I am only entitled to whatever He chooses, whenever He chooses.  So I have learned to appreciate each and every opportunity presented.

There's nothing like knowing that you can't just have something whenever you want it to make you want it that much more.

Thank you so much for your question!!

Wipeout

Now, I have an idea of how I picture my service.  It's probably a bit unrealistic but I would love to be that graceful and elegant slave who is flawless in her service.  I want to be the woman who is collected and poised in all that she does, always the image of perfection representing her Master well in all situations.

The other night around dusk, Daddy and I were out jogging and came across a couple of deer on the trail we were on. It's not uncommon in our little corner of suburbia for deer to be out freely roaming in and around our neighborhood. These creatures are stunning and I am amazed by their grace and beauty each and every time I see them walking through the woods.

They noticed us and bounded deeper into the woods then stopped, keeping a close eye on us as we passed by.  I commented to Daddy about how I wish I could be as graceful as these beautiful animals.
He said, "I think you are".

I laughed and asked, "Have you so quickly forgotten about the incident on the beach?...a moment you said you would never forget!"

So, let me back up a little bit.  We were out walking one morning on the beach and came across a little ravine in the sand that we could either hop across or detour around.  Honestly, I am vertically challenged so for me it would have been considered a jump.  Plus, knowing my tendency to be clumsy, I opted for the detour.

Let it be known...this actually was a well thought out and conscious decision to prevent doing something that would embarrass myself and/or Daddy.  But as we continued on Daddy picked at me for being chicken so naturally when we came back by that same spot, I just had to prove Him wrong.

I backed up a little, to get some speed and momentum, jogged a few steps then launched myself in the air.  Just as I reached the other side of this small ravine, my foot hit the edge, sank down and sent my body flying.  I came to a crash landing on my entire right side.  It all happened so quick and I was in shock and hurting so bad, but all I could do was lay there and laugh.

How...utterly... embarrassing!!!

Of course, He was laughing too and everyone around me was trying not to laugh as they walked by.  He claims it was one of the highlights of our trip!  Let's put it this way, I fell so hard that my shoulder and hip were sore for days!

So you can see, my grace doesn't come close to rivaling that of a deer.

And Daddy decided to clarify his statement..."Well you're graceful when it matters"
